WOW!! The Santa Maria QUIEGOLANI article really gets me twisted. It activates my feminist orientation and a knee-jerk reaction that tends to be critical and disapproving of these so-called traditions. On the other hand, it sends shutters down my back to think of the condemnation of these men as backward and oppressive. You see the bind? And just like when I was doing field work in Puebla for my dissertation, I need to take a step back and try to understand all of this stuff (or any stuff that offends my sensibility) using different sets of lens. So I guess I need to think about how do traditions, values and ways of knowing (culture) mediate this thing (democracy) we have come to privilege so highly? And to what extent is democracy a universal aspiration in the first place?
